How much does it cost to study abroad? 

Of all the factors to be considered when planning to study abroad, the cost of studying abroad definitely takes the front seat, especially when deciding on a study location, university, or intended program of study. It is important to know the cost of studying abroad so that you can draw up a tuition budget for yourself, making your decision process a whole lot easier.  

3 major components make up the cost of studying abroad: 

  • Tuition 
  • Living expenses (accommodation, transportation, personal expenses) 
  • Books & Supplies 

Tuition however takes the largest percentage of your study abroad expenses.   

So for this article, we’re going to be looking at tuition fees and living expenses across our several study destinations.   

United Kingdom  

The minimum tuition fee for a UK school is $12,000 which is ₦6.3M.   

For living expenses, this is categorized by 2 locations, you’re either living inside London or outside London.  

If you’re living inside London, your living expenses would be a minimum of $12,006 (₦6.4M), outside London - $9,207 (₦ 4.9M).  

The total amount of your tuition and living expenses should also be in your account for 28 days to be able to apply for your study visa in the UK.  

Ireland  

The tuition fee for an Ireland school costs about a minimum of €12,500 which is ₦5.7M. For living expenses, a minimum of €7,500 (₦3.4M) is required.   

The total amount of your tuition and living expenses should be in your account for 6 months to be able to apply for your study visa in Ireland.  

United States of America  

The tuition fee for the US ranges from $20,000- $40,000 (₦7.6M- ₦15M).  

For living expenses, a minimum of $10,000 - $15,000 (₦3.8M – ₦5.7M) is required.  

The total amount of your tuition and living expenses should be in your account for 6 months to be able to apply for your study visa in the US.  

Australia  

For Australia, it is usually within the range of $35,000 - $40,000 per year, which is from ₦16M- ₦18.3M.  

For living expenses, a minimum of $10,000 – $15,000 (₦2.9M - ₦4.5M)  

The total amount of your tuition and living expenses should be in your account for 6 months to be able to apply for your study visa in Australia.  

Canada  

For undergraduates, a minimum of $20,000 - $35,000 (₦6 Million – ₦10.5 Million) per year and a minimum of $31,000 (₦9.3 Million) for post-graduates.   

For living expenses, a minimum of $10,000 (₦3M) is required.   

The total amount of your tuition and living expenses should be in your account for 4 months (online application) or 6 months (paper application) to be able to apply for your study visa in Canada.  

Germany  

In Germany, tuition fees range from €11,000 which is around ₦5M. 

For living expenses, a minimum of €7,000 (₦3.2M) is required.  

Germany does not have a time frame of how long your tuition fee and living expenses must be in your bank account, however, your money must be deposited in a Germany blocked account (an account for international students where they can withdraw from upon arrival in Germany).  
 

*It is important to know that tuition fees differ across universities, and courses.   

 
Most schools offer scholarship opportunities (mostly on merit) ranging from 10 - 50% off tuition fees. While fully funded scholarships are available, they are usually few and highly competitive as it covers all students around the world.
